Facebook and Google to face Senate inquiry over proposed media bargain code

Executives from Google and Facebook will front a Senate committee hearing today as they continue to push back against the Morrison government's plans for a mandatory media bargaining code.

The code seeks to force digital giants to pay media outlets for news content on their platforms or face fines of up to $10 million.

In response Facebook has threatened to prevent users from sharing news content while Google says it is experimenting with burying links to traditional news sites.

The inquiry is due to report on February 12.
